Overview

Stephen Dew is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on intellectual property, including patent prosecution and licensing. His prosecution experience includes a wide range of technologies including artificial intelligence, natural language processing, digital signal processing, mechanical devices, medical devices, and smart metering. Leveraging his background in software engineering, his licensing practice includes software licensing and open source software compliance. His experience also includes a six-month secondment at a major technology company, during which he gained insight into the demands of in-house counsel. During this time, he served as product counsel, assessing legal risk relating to new products, and counseling on licensing matters.

Prior to launching his legal career, Mr. Dew worked as an engineer for over a decade, in both technical and customer-facing roles. Previously, he held the position of Compiler Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor (now NXP). Mr. Dew also held Applications Engineer positions at Freescale Semiconductor and StarCore LLC, in which he optimized customers’ software and provided technical training to customers. Mr. Dew has knowledge of various software programming languages. Additionally, prior to law school, Mr. Dew worked as a consulting technical expert for patent infringement cases.

Mr. Dew prepares, prosecutes, and manages a portfolio of natural language patent prosecution matters for a leading software company.

Mr. Dew regularly performs intellectual property due diligence for a variety of clients.

Mr. Dew was recognized in 2022 and 2023 as one of the "Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch" for Intellectual Property Law by The Best Lawyers in America®.

As an immigrant, Mr. Dew dedicates a large part of his pro-bono practice on immigration matters. Mr. Dew has represented several clients seeking asylum before immigration court and seeking immigrant visas. Additionally, Mr. Dew also routinely prepares and files patent applications on a pro bono basis for solo inventors and students.

Mr. Dew speaks French and has a basic knowledge of German.
