Overview

Sujit Kotwal focuses on strategic counseling and patent portfolio development, with an emphasis on software and computer-related technologies. With more than 22 years of patent law experience, Mr. Kotwal has counseled a diverse set of clients including individual inventors, start-ups, and small- mid- and large-sized companies, including Fortune 500 companies. From 2013 to 2016, Mr. Kotwal served as the co-team leader of Kilpatrick Townsend's Electronics and Software Practice, one of the largest patent prosecution practice groups in the United States.

Mr. Kotwal helps build value for his clients by developing strategic business-focused patent portfolios both within the U.S. and internationally. Over the years, he has worked with a broad spectrum of technologies including technologies related to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), networking architectures and protocols, cloud computing services, chatbots, natural language understanding/processing (NLU/NLP) systems, autonomous vehicles/machines, security and access control systems, big data processing and analysis, social networking systems, multimedia and image processing, computer graphics and animation, user experience/interfaces (UX/UI), IoT/E technologies, business intelligence (BI) solutions, database systems, storage technologies, bioinformatics, and others. With the growing importance of AI/ML related technologies, Mr. Kotwal has given several presentations on best practices for protecting inventions in the AI/ML space.

Mr. Kotwal is adept at quickly developing a deep understanding of his client’s technology and developing patent portfolios with a view towards achieving the client’s business and market goals. He makes the entire patent prosecution process a smooth and rewarding experience for the engineers and technologists he works with. He has extensive experience managing teams of patent attorneys and agents – consistently delivering high-quality products for his clients. His clients entrust Mr. Kotwal with their most strategic and complex technologies.

Mr. Kotwal is also experienced in preparing patent non-infringement and validity opinions, performing due diligence studies, and handling reexamination and reissue proceedings before the U.S. Patent Office for his clients. Mr. Kotwal has also been involved in various stages of patent litigation. Multiple patents prosecuted by Mr. Kotwal have been asserted, resulting in favorable judgments for his clients. Prior to joining the legal profession, Mr. Kotwal worked as a software engineer/architect in Silicon Valley for five years. Mr. Kotwal still considers himself a techie-at-heart.
