Dudley Humphrey practices law in the areas of aviation, general business, construction and business litigation. He is a lecturer and writer in professional responsibility and construction litigation.
Mr. Humphrey regularly represents general contractors in various aspects of assigning responsibility to trades and their coordination during the construction and renovation of facilities to house data handling for manufacturing and service companies. He represents owners in coordination of construction and design documents for data centers together with the interface of internal and external systems designers and installers with a view towards anticipating problems in the field and planning for increase in capacity and likely future developments. Mr. Humphrey practices in the area of civil litigation including representation involving torts law, commercial litigation, products liability and commercial real estate. He represents owners, general contractors, and subcontractors in construction disputes involving construction defects, claims of lien, and bond claims and acts as mediator of complex multi-party construction disputes.
Mr. Humphrey was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® for Construction Law and Corporate Law in 2018 and the ten years immediately preceding. Mr. Humphrey was also named to Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite" list for many years and in 2007 and 2023, he was selected to Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite Hall of Fame" in the area of Construction. He was also recognized as a 2009 North Carolina "Super Lawyer" in the areas of Construction Litigation, Construction/Surety and Estate Planning & Probate by Super Lawyers magazine. Mr. Humphrey is the fourth recipient of the Evelyn M. Coman Award for Distinguished Service in the field of Construction Law. In 2014, Mr. Humphrey was awarded the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory for his proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Experience
Successfully represented a heavy-civil contractor specializing in the construction and rehabilitation of dams, spillways, and major water resource projects against claims for defective construction of a dam. Collected at settlement conference the balance due on the contract not withstanding the required endorsement had not been made and case law held that owner was not required to pay contractor.
Represented multiple condominium owners seeking loss-of-use damages against the developer. Achieved a successful settlement of all claims.
Represented Hanesbrands Inc. during contracting, design and construction of headquarters building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina achieving a savings of more than $8 million for the owner.
Acted as mediator and settled multiparty construction litigation regarding a public museum and appeared before governmental agency to assist in obtaining funds to consummate settlement.
Successfully represented a North Carolina general contractor for three generational changes of ownership and management in a construction company.
